News channels, Instagram and Facebook have changed since the killing of George Floyd. People have been posting quotes, black screens and other ways to show sympathy and express anger towards a major problem that has been kept in the shadow for a long time. Floyd’s death has been the catalyst for the uproar. However, his death is not an exception. Violence against afro-americans is a tale as old as time, and with it the BLM-movement.
Annet van der Meulen, student English Language Teaching and X-Honours student, will take the lead in the X-Honours inspiration session of 17 June. She opens up the conversation about racism and the BLM-movement in the X-Honours community, with its predominantly white participants, and other interested students from NHL Stenden.
The goal of the session?
Annet’s goal is to show you that there’s a lot to learn. A lot to talk about, listen to and educate ourselves on. This session consists of an introduction into the topic and some discussions in smaller groups. Annet hopes participants will gain a sense of urgency. That they will learn more about and try to understand what exactly is going on and how deeply rooted and complicated racism and injustice against black people is.
All students from NHL Stenden are welcome to join! We hope to welcome you in this inspiration session. It will be casted in Blackboard Collaborate, starting at 14.30 hrs. You can ‘walk in’ 15 minutes earlier and have a chat if you like.
