Copyright: What to know when you’re creating (3 February)

Upcoming Wednesday will be about how to deal with copyright when you are making creations. Many students are interested in the art or designing but struggle with questions related to this topic.

For example, can you use material of others to create something? Under what conditions? And what can be consequences if you infringe someone’s copyright? If you make your designs, like illustrations, architecture or music known to the world, can someone else use that and spread pictures of it? And do you have to do something to get copyright? Are you allowed to repaint someone else’s photo and sell it or play Spotify in your business office where you receive customers? Is it okay that people share copies of sheet music online? Or recipes? And what possibilities do you have with creative commons?

Okay, mere copying is probably not what you plan to do, but you might have gotten inspired by someone else’s creation and adjusted it a little at some point. Maybe you want to make use of a technique or a method that you learned from YouTube or in class, and you ask yourself if that be allowed either. Similarly, there could be issues designing something for school, or for your employer. Would it still be yours to sell?

There is so much to know around copyright that is relevant for creative students. And there are quite a few related laws and regulations related, like portrait right. All these questions and issues will be addressed on 3 February.

About the speaker

Astrid van Twillert, one of the X-Honours coaches, will introduce you to these matters. She will explain relevant European and Dutch legislations as well as illustrate the topic with many examples. If you have any questions, there is plenty of room to ask them. And you will get tips to keep you out of trouble 😉

Besides being a coach, Astrid has worked as a teacher and researcher for years. She did a legal study in the past and used to teach students on how to deal with copyright and make correct references when it comes to writing texts and research. Currently, she paints as an amateur artist. Therefore, she made a study on this topic related to art and creations, and she’s willing to share her knowledge with everyone interested. You can find out more about her on her LinkedIn page!

All students from NHL Stenden are welcome to join this session. It will be casted in Blackboard Collaborate, starting at 14.30 hrs. You can ‘walk in’ 15 minutes earlier and have a chat if you like.
